Build Log#
Keep a running log of decisions and changes during your build. This is your project diary — when someone asks "why did you do it that way?", this log has the answer.
Required for Yellow+ builds. Recommended for all builds.
Project name: ___
Builder: ___
Build path: ___
Started: ___
How to use this log#
Copy the entry template below for each work session. Date each entry. Focus on decisions and problems, not just what you did.
Three reasons:
- Future you — in two months, you will not remember why you chose Chart.js over D3, or why the dashboard has 4 tabs instead of 5.
- Handover — if someone else needs to modify your tool, the build log tells them what you tried, what worked, and what did not.
- Prompt preservation — AI prompts that produced good results are valuable. Save them here so you (or others) can reuse them.
Entry template#
Copy everything below the line for each new entry.
Date: ___#
What I did:
[Brief description of work done this session]
Decisions made:
[Any choices you made and why. Be specific.]
Example: "Used Chart.js instead of D3 because Chart.js was simpler for basic line charts and had better documentation for beginners."
AI prompts used:
[Paste or summarise the prompts you gave the AI tool. Include the tool name.]
Example: "Replit Agent — 'Create a line chart showing daily attendance percentage for the last 30 days. Use Chart.js. Data comes from the /api/attendance endpoint. Use the Springpod colors: primary #0BB3B7, accent #446DF6.'"
Issues encountered:
[Anything that went wrong, surprised you, or took longer than expected]
Next steps:
[What you plan to do in the next session]
Tips for effective entries#
- Be honest about problems. "The AI generated code that crashed when the database was empty" is useful. "Everything went fine" is not.
- Save your prompts. Especially the ones that worked well. They save time when building similar features later.
- Note what you changed from AI output. If the AI generated something and you modified it, record what you changed and why.
- Keep entries short. A few sentences per section is enough. This is a log, not an essay.
